1. Acceptance of Terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the ScamCatchr Chrome browser extension and any related services, including the scamcatchr.com website and the weekly scam digest email (collectively, the "Service"). The Service is operated by ScamCatchr ("we," "us," or "our").
By installing the extension from the Chrome Web Store, accessing the website, or subscribing to the weekly digest, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy. These Terms form a legally binding agreement between you and ScamCatchr.
2. Description of Service
ScamCatchr is a Chrome browser extension that analyses email metadata within Gmail to detect potential scam, phishing, and fraud indicators. The Service provides:
- Real-time email scanning — analysis of sender domains, display names, and scam keyword patterns as you view email in Gmail
- Email authentication checks — reading SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results from email headers via the Gmail API when you choose to authorise access
- In-browser warnings — risk banners and inbox badges displayed directly within Gmail
- Phishing report submission — the ability to report suspicious sender domains to our community database
- Community flagging — automatic warnings for domains that have been independently reported by multiple users
- Weekly digest — an optional email summarising scam trends detected across the ScamCatchr user base
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years of age to use ScamCatchr. If you are under 18, you must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian. By using the Service, you represent that you meet these requirements.
The Service is intended for personal and business use in jurisdictions where email scam detection software is permitted. You are solely responsible for ensuring compliance with local laws.
4. Google Account & OAuth
ScamCatchr optionally connects to your Google Account via OAuth 2.0 to access the Gmail API. When you choose to connect:
- We request only the
gmail.readonlyOAuth scope — the most restrictive Gmail read permission available - We read only the From and Authentication-Results headers of emails you open in Gmail
- We never read, store, or transmit the body of any email
- Your OAuth token is stored only in
chrome.storage.localon your own device - We do not store your OAuth token on our servers
You can revoke access at any time from Google Account → Third-party apps or by clicking "Disconnect" in the extension popup. ScamCatchr's use of Google user data complies with the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
5. Acceptable Use
You may use ScamCatchr to protect yourself or your organisation from email scams and phishing attacks, submit genuine phishing reports, and share information about the extension for legitimate protective purposes.
6. Prohibited Activities
You agree not to:
- Submit false or fabricated phishing reports to manipulate the community database
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or modify the extension for malicious purposes
- Use the extension or its data to build a competing product without written consent
- Circumvent or interfere with any security feature of the Service
- Use automated methods to interact with or extract data from the Service at scale
- Impersonate ScamCatchr or misrepresent your affiliation with us
- Use the Service in any way that violates applicable law or third-party rights
7. Phishing Reports & Community Data
When you submit a phishing report, you grant ScamCatchr a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual licence to use the anonymised data (sender domain, subject excerpt, scam type, risk level) to operate the community flagging database, generate digest statistics, and improve detection. You represent that all reports are made in good faith and reflect a genuine scam belief.
8. Weekly Digest Subscription
The weekly digest is optional. By subscribing you consent to receiving one automated email per week (every Monday) to your connected Gmail address. You can unsubscribe from any digest email or the popup at any time. Your address will be removed from our database within 24 hours of unsubscription and will never be used for any other purpose or shared with third parties.
9. Intellectual Property
All code, design, branding, and content comprising ScamCatchr are owned by ScamCatchr and protected by copyright and other applicable intellectual property laws. These Terms grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the extension as intended. You retain full ownership of any data you provide through the Service.
10. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. SCAMCATCHR DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL DETECT ALL SCAM EMAILS, WILL BE ERROR-FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED, OR THAT ANY FLAGGED EMAIL IS IN FACT FRAUDULENT OR ANY UNFLAGGED EMAIL IS IN FACT SAFE.
11. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SCAMCATCHR SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING FINANCIAL LOSSES FROM UNDETECTED SCAMS OR INCORRECTLY FLAGGED LEGITIMATE EMAILS. SCAMCATCHR'S TOTAL LIABILITY SHALL NOT EXCEED USD $10 OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID IN THE PRIOR 12 MONTHS, WHICHEVER IS GREATER.
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless ScamCatchr and its officers, employees, and agents from any claims, liabilities, or expenses arising from your violation of these Terms, any false phishing report, or your infringement of third-party rights.
13. Termination
You may terminate at any time by uninstalling the extension and unsubscribing from the digest. We may suspend your access to community features immediately if we believe you are violating these Terms. Sections 9–12 and 15 survive termination.
14. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms periodically. We will update the "Last updated" date above. For material changes, we will display a notice in the extension popup. Your continued use after such notice constitutes acceptance.
15. Governing Law
